from halifax to hannah arendt
This week is dubbed from Halifax to Hannah Arendt.
We begin this photo journey last Saturday (boy that feels like forever ago!) in the very miserable town of Halifax. Though the town was crap the company was lovely. Here is my friend Sarah and me in a café for lunch:
here are the jacket potatoes cooking that we were ooing and awing over!
I went to Halifax with Sarah and Yancy a mere stone skip away from Leeds to go to a book fair. It had nothing on wayzgoose. I’ve been by Halifax several times and wanted to go so much because it really looked lovely from the train but it turned out to be scowly.
The book fair was interesting. And lunch in the café was good. At that point Sarah’s parents from near Chester had arrived and so Yancy and left to explore Halifax. We were not impressed.
Here is a named alley…
any town with an alley with a name like that… well you know then it’s got to be pretty bad!
We walked around the city centre which is pretty much a smaller version of Leeds but not as nice.
Here are the corniest musicians ever:
we did go to the market and bought some candy (of course… I mean what do you expect with two sweet-a-holics!)
here’s yancy jumping for joy that we are almost at the train station
ooo cloudy cloudy!
apparently this is an amazing science museum for kids. Rosie if you ever make it here…. This is something about Halifax you don’t want to miss!
this is how we knew we were in Halifax to begin with
train station
this is what I think of Halifax:
later that night yancy and I went to Firefly to see her friends Samba band play!!
Here we are getting ready!
and the giant TV in millennium square
Firefly was good apart from the terrible music and lack of people doing anything. It was also not good when this random German guy that Yancy told I was from Berlin came up and was talking to me asking me where in Berlin I was from! Having never been to Berlin you can guess how far that conversation went! He also had a broken pint glass which was weird.
Here are some exciting photos from Lifton Place my new studio! Wooooooooo
I have too much fun there:
here is a fourth year students really bad art:
and this is the hassleblad amazingness camera!
anyway. So the week was uneventful aside from various school related things.
It snowed damnation!
On Wednesday Yancy and I headed down to the common place for the second year’s show. We discovered a part of Leeds we didn’t know existed… it consists of a cathedral!
The art show was good and saw lots of my friends
Oh this is before we left.. Yancy petting the cat on the towel
here are people watching movies
and people looking at art
yancy contemplating over the twin painting and whether we could pass as twins (for satan I mean for sure!!)
here is the ab fabula 80s microwave in the common place! I hope they don’t still use it
me and my friend Lucy
Yancy and my friend Helen deliberating over cultural studies theory and the theoryness of everything because that’s what uni studies in England do… talk theory all the time!
Then we went to Faversham with Ruth and later Neil (Yancy’s friend from Newcastle) arrived. We went to see two bands: NYS (Franz Ferdinand esque) and shitdisco (I don’t know what esque)
We had an amazing night of crazy dancing and singing and people in wigs!
Here are a conglomeration of photos from Faversham! (My new favourite club!!)
NYS lead singer in fencing outfit
We took this after chasing a girl in a blond wig into the toilet (not literally the toilet but the bathroom… you know what I mean) because we wanted to take her photo but then we thought that was weird
here is a cool girl with a pink green and blue wig dancing up a British girl dance storm
here is the blond wig girl
yancy and ruth
Yancy’s rendition of me and Neil dancing crazily to British whatever music (I don’t know how you describe British music except as British!)
the bands destroyed drum set
coooooooool light
the night concluded in a series of events that involved tequila dancing insanely and the girl with the pink, green and blue wig!
we got home or I did anyway at 3am and went to school at 9am the next day! I am turning into the epitome of British uni students! *sigh*
anyway Friday was hanging was studio seminar, hanging out with Thea and Gareth, taking photos with Yancy and not anything for St. Patrick’s day!
Here is some weird and disturbing art from the Old Mining Building Studios
people painting
Hammam (the weird and maybe funny sometimes Iraqi) and Edgar (the straaaaaaaaaaange dude from California!)
Gareth and Laura chattin it up
in case you didn’t know this is Thea
and sometimes I can be Thea with Thea of course
but Gareth believes he is Thea (we think he is mistaken!)
Saturday I was super-nerd and went to a Hannah Arendt conference/symposium thing at school sponsored by CentreCATH. Hannah Arendt was a German Jewish philosopher/political thinker/sociologist/incredible amazingness… although most of what happened and was said in the conference went over my head completely! It’s ok. I enjoyed it all the same. And there was a crazy Serbian scholar there named Obrad Savic who was INSANE! But hilarious! If you want to hear the story about the no smoking in Ohio let me know… it is so funny. Seriously I really am serious. Anyway then that night Yancy and I went to a white lodge party. You may recall we went to one of these in October or November and it was insane! Yes it was insane again! Here are some photos….
Yancy embracing the toilet …
yes we didn’t know these still existed either!
Me and yancy being weird!
from Left: Ruth (from Scotland), Alexandra (from Italy – it was her birthday party!), Jana (from Czech Repupblic) and I think that last girl is Charlotte… or maybe Yancy… I can’t remember!
yancy talking to a German dude… well I think he was German he might have been French though
the best part was sitting in the kitchen talking to this German guy Bert and Britney Spears coming on ‘hit me baby one more time’ and Bert saying ‘I love this song!’ and getting up to dance and everyone in the living room was dancing and singing along even the boys! Ah classic!
this is Ashley’s car (Ashley is Ruth’s friend) HOW COOL IS THAT!!! (the car not the friend bit!)
and Ashley and Ruth and the blur in the middle is Yancy!
anyway we got home at 3am again but I woke up at 7am for some reason and couldn’t sleep and neither could Yancy. As you can guess though Sunday = not much doing of anything.
So at the end of this week I’m leaving on my Easter vacation so you won’t get to hear about my exciting life for a whole month! How on earth will you survive! I bought my ticket so I really am going now and I even booked my flight from Sweden home so I have to get at least to Sweden! The flight is only an hour and fifteen minutes and cost like 20 quid! Crazy!
So write to me if you like and when I get back be ready for a photo extravaganza of like 10 countries!!! Hooray for photos!!!
Bye bye!!!
